Although it was initially calledView of Castelfranco with a shepherd boy drawn by Giorgione, later research (1978) has pointed out beyond doubt the correspondence between the drawing and the Montagnana townscape, identifying the exact perspective point outside the eastern walls from which the famous artist portrayed San Zeno fortress.
